The state of the editor

Most WordPress sites still build pages with a page builder.

Builders made layout easy, but the 2025 Web Almanac is blunt about the cost: they “often generate more complex DOM structures and larger CSS and JavaScript bundles”, and older builders have created long-term lock-in. The native block editor is catching up fast.

Time to move?

Is your page builder holding your site back?

Some builder sites run fine for years. Tick what you recognise and see whether a move to native blocks is worth it now.

Native blocks
Page builder

Page builder Wrapper on wrapper, the builder’s full CSS and JavaScript on every page, layout settling late.

Native blocks Clean block markup, with each block’s assets loaded only where it’s used.

Lighter pages

Same layout. A fraction of the code.

Drag the divider. Blocks registered with block.json have their CSS and JavaScript enqueued only when the block is on the page — the Block Editor Handbook calls it “reduced page sizes”.

Pattern libraries

Build a new page in minutes, not mornings.

Your repeating sections become a named, grouped pattern library. Editors insert a pattern, swap the words and images, and the page is on-brand by default.

  • Grouped and named for your teamCategories that match how you think about pages, so the right section is easy to find.
  • Content-only editingWordPress opens inserted patterns in a mode limited to text and images, which prevents accidental layout changes.
  • Synced where it should beSections that must match everywhere are synced; the rest stay free to adapt.

The editor experience

What a good editing experience actually looks like.

Every block and pattern we hand over is checked against these three tests — each built on a WordPress API, not a workaround.

Preview

What you see is what goes live

Each block’s editor view matches the front end, with sensible settings in the sidebar — no shortcodes, no guessing.

Guardrails

Hard to break by accident

Layouts locked with templateLock and per-block move/remove locks where structure matters, open where it doesn’t.

On-brand choices

Only colours and sizes that fit

Palettes and type sizes come from theme.json, with custom colours and font sizes switched off where they’d break the design.

How we work

From content audit to a calmer editor.

Whether it’s one block or a full builder migration, the steps are the same — and everything is built and checked on staging first.

  1. Content auditDays 1–2

    Find what repeats

We look at your pages and list which sections repeat and which need custom blocks.

    • Page and section inventory
    • Builder and shortcode usage
    • Data each block must show
  2. Block planDays 2–4

    Agree what editors can change

The block and pattern list is signed off, including locks and the options editors will see.

    • Block and pattern list
    • Locking and permissions plan
    • theme.json presets
  3. Build on staging1–5 weeks

    Build, test, rebuild pages

Blocks and patterns built and tested on a staging copy; if you’re migrating, pages are rebuilt and compared with the originals.

    • Blocks registered with block.json
    • Pattern library
    • Page-by-page rebuild
  4. Switch overFinal days

    Go live and hand over

We deploy, check every page, remove the old builder code and walk your team through the new editor.

Page builder migration

Leave Elementor, Divi or WPBakery — keep every page.

We rebuild each page as native blocks on staging, compare it with the original, and only remove the builder once everything matches.

  • No content lostEvery page rebuilt and checked side by side before anything goes live.
  • No shortcode leftoversBuilder markup is replaced, not left behind for the next redesign to clean up.
  • Block theme or hybridFull site editing where it helps; your current theme kept where it already works.

New blocks only pay off if people use them. Every project ends with guidance built around your own site.

  • A short video per block and patternHow to use it, which settings matter and what it’s for.
  • Blocks delivered as a pluginThey keep working with most modern themes, including if you redesign later.
  • Update checks with a care planOur care plans test your blocks against new WordPress releases.

Questions, answered

Will custom blocks slow my site down?

Not when they’re built properly. Blocks registered with block.json have their CSS and JavaScript loaded only on pages that contain them, so a block used on one page adds nothing to the rest.

Can editors still break the layout?

Much less easily. We use WordPress’s own locking — template locks and per-block move and remove locks — and content-only editing for patterns, so text and images stay editable while the structure stays put.

Will I lose content when leaving my page builder?

No. We rebuild each page in native blocks on staging and compare it against the original before anything goes live.

Do custom blocks break when WordPress updates?

We use the official block APIs and test against upcoming releases, which keeps breakage rare. Our care plans include update checks.

Can you add blocks to my current theme?

Yes. Blocks are delivered as a plugin, so they work with most modern themes, including our themes.

What is full site editing?

It lets you edit headers, footers and templates with blocks in the Site Editor instead of in code or the Customizer.

Should I use ACF blocks or native blocks?

Both have a place. We suggest native blocks for layout-heavy content and ACF blocks for data-driven sections, and explain the trade-off in the plan.
