Checkout with Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads Review (Lite and Pro)

Our review of Checkout with Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads: how Paddle works as merchant of record, the free Lite features, what Pro adds, setup, pricing and limitations.

Checkout with Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads review: Paddle collects VAT and sends the invoice as merchant of record

Selling digital products worldwide sounds simple until tax gets involved. A customer in Germany expects German VAT. A buyer in New York pays New York sales tax. Australia, the UK and dozens of other countries all have their own rules, returns and invoice formats. For a small Easy Digital Downloads store, keeping up with all of that can take more time than building the products.

Checkout with Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads solves this by connecting your EDD store to Paddle, a payment platform that acts as your merchant of record. In this review, we’ll explain what that means, walk through the features of the free Lite version and the Pro version, show you how to set it up, and help you decide which version is right for your store.

Quick verdict: if you sell software, themes, plugins or e-books with EDD and want Paddle to handle VAT, sales tax and invoices for you, the free Lite version of Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads covers one-time sales with no limits. Upgrade to Pro when you need subscriptions, refunds from WordPress or inline checkout.

Checkout with Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads: EDD checkout, Paddle as merchant of record handling tax, invoices and payments, then a completed order

What does Paddle as merchant of record mean for your store?

A merchant of record is the business that legally sells the product to the customer. Normally, that’s you. When Paddle is your merchant of record, Paddle sells to the customer on your behalf. That means Paddle:

  • Calculates, collects and pays VAT and sales tax based on where each customer is.
  • Issues tax-compliant invoices and receipts to your customers.
  • Handles payments, fraud checks and chargebacks.
  • Pays you your earnings after its fees.

You keep your Easy Digital Downloads store, your products, your discount codes and your licence keys. Paddle takes care of the money side, so you don’t have to register for VAT in multiple countries or file tax returns for each one.

How Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads works: the buyer checks out in your EDD store, Paddle acts as merchant of record and handles tax, invoices and payment, and EDD completes the order and issues licence keys

How Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads handles VAT and sales tax

EDD VAT handling is one of the main reasons store owners choose Paddle. With a regular payment gateway, your store is the seller, so you have to work out the right tax rate for every buyer, collect it, file returns and keep records for each country. With Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads, Paddle is the seller, so that work moves to Paddle.

Here’s what happens on a typical order:

  1. Your buyer adds products to the cart in EDD and goes to checkout, where any discount codes and fees are applied as normal.
  2. Paddle’s checkout opens and works out the right VAT or sales tax based on where the buyer is.
  3. The buyer pays Paddle, and Paddle sends them a tax-compliant invoice or receipt.
  4. Paddle sends a signature-verified webhook to your site, and EDD completes the order and issues any licence keys.
  5. Paddle pays out your earnings, after tax and its fees.

Because Paddle adds the tax itself, you should turn off EDD’s own tax settings. With Pro, the EDD order screen shows the charged total, the tax Paddle collected and your earnings, so you can see the full picture for every sale. Using Easy Digital Downloads with a merchant of record this way means you can sell to customers in new countries without first registering for tax there.

Who is Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads for?

Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads is a great fit for EDD stores that sell:

  • WordPress themes and plugins
  • Desktop or web software and SaaS licences
  • E-books, courses, templates and other digital downloads

It’s especially useful if you sell to customers in many countries and want one partner to handle VAT, sales tax and invoices. Paddle is built for digital products, software and SaaS, so your products need to fit Paddle’s own acceptable use policy.

Key features of the free Lite version

The free Lite version of Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads has no order, revenue or product limits. It takes one-time payments and covers everything a store needs to sell with Paddle safely.

Checkout that keeps buyers on your site

  • Overlay checkout. Paddle’s secure checkout opens over your EDD checkout page, so buyers never leave your site.
  • Works with the EDD checkout shortcode and the EDD checkout block.
  • No products to create in Paddle. Every order is sent to Paddle with its own lines and prices. Discount codes, fees, variable prices and multi-item carts are charged exactly as EDD calculates them.
  • Your checkout, your style. Choose a light or dark theme, an automatic or fixed checkout language, optional payment icons and a custom label for the payment method.
  • A hosted fallback for buyers who don’t have JavaScript turned on.
  • All Paddle-supported currencies. If your store currency isn’t supported, Paddle is simply hidden at checkout.

Buyers can pay with cards, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay, depending on what’s enabled in your Paddle account.

Reliability and safety

Payment plugins have to be dependable. As an EDD Paddle gateway, Lite includes:

  • Signature-verified webhooks, so nothing else can mark an order as paid.
  • One-click webhook setup for Paddle Billing. The plugin creates the webhook and saves its secret for you.
  • Protection against duplicate and simultaneous webhooks, so no order is completed or refunded twice.
  • Support for several stores on one Paddle account. Each store only acts on its own orders.
  • Instant payment confirmation with Paddle when the buyer returns (Paddle Billing), so a slow webhook doesn’t leave anyone waiting.
  • Payment checks. Underpaid, wrong-currency or outdated-checkout payments are flagged instead of completing the order.
  • A Test connection button, clear admin warnings and a debug log.

Refunds and licence keys

  • Refunds made in Paddle, full or partial, are recorded in EDD automatically. On Paddle Billing, this works down to the product line.
  • If you record a refund in EDD first, it’s matched with the Paddle refund that follows, so it isn’t recorded twice.
  • With EDD Software Licensing, licence keys are created when a one-time payment completes, and refunds made in Paddle update the licences.

A helpful admin dashboard

Under Downloads » Paddle, the Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads dashboard gives you a setup checklist, your last 30 days of Paddle sales, quick links and a Lite vs Pro comparison. There’s also a Help & support tab with documentation, an FAQ and copyable system info, plus a basic Paddle box on the EDD order screen that links the transaction and customer to your Paddle dashboard.

What Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads Pro adds

Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads Pro builds on Lite with the features growing stores need. It uses the same settings, order data and webhook URL, so upgrading is seamless. Activating Pro deactivates Lite, and nothing has to be set up again.

Subscriptions with EDD Recurring Payments

Paddle EDD subscriptions work through the EDD Recurring Payments add-on, and Paddle bills every payment:

  • Monthly, quarterly, yearly and other billing periods, plus free trials and sign-up fees.
  • Renewals, failed payments, Paddle’s payment retries, cancellations and pauses in Paddle are synced to EDD.
  • Cancellations in EDD are sent to Paddle, and you can pause and resume billing from the subscription screen.
  • Customers update their card on Paddle’s secure page, from their account or from EDD’s “update payment method” emails.

Licensing with EDD Software Licensing

  • Licence keys are extended on every renewal and revoked on refunds and chargebacks.
  • Licence upgrades and renewals keep their billing date in Paddle.

Refunds and disputes from WordPress

  • Refund from the EDD order screen, and the refund is sent to Paddle. Refund the full order, part of it, a single product line or just the sign-up fee.
  • Refund approval and rejection are tracked in order notes.
  • Chargebacks and disputes put the order on hold automatically.

Inline checkout, invoices and reporting

  • Inline checkout embeds Paddle’s payment form right in your EDD checkout page. The overlay is still available if you prefer it.
  • A Paddle tax invoice (Billing) or receipt (Classic) link on the EDD receipt.
  • A full order screen panel with the Paddle transaction, customer, charged total, tax and your earnings.
  • A “Check payment with Paddle” button for pending orders.
  • A licence key for automatic updates and priority support.

How to set up Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads

Here’s how to connect a Paddle Billing account to Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads in five steps. You can test everything in Paddle’s sandbox before you take a real payment.

How to set up Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads in five steps: install the plugin, add your Paddle keys, set up the webhook, approve your domain in Paddle, then enable Paddle and test a sandbox purchase
  1. Install and activate the plugin, then go to Downloads » Settings » Payments » Paddle.
  2. Choose Paddle Billing and paste your API key and client-side token. Sandbox credentials are used while EDD Test Mode is on.
  3. Click Set up webhook. The plugin creates the notification destination in Paddle and saves its secret.
  4. In Paddle, approve your domain under Checkout » Website approval, and set your checkout page as the Default payment link.
  5. Enable Paddle under Payments » General, click Test connection and make a sandbox purchase.

If you use Paddle Classic with this EDD Paddle gateway, you’ll enter your Vendor ID, API Auth Code and public key instead, and paste the webhook URL into Paddle’s Alerts / Webhooks screen by hand.

Tip: turn off EDD’s own tax settings. Paddle adds VAT and sales tax itself, so leaving EDD taxes on would charge tax twice.

Pricing and the 14-day money-back guarantee

The Lite version is free. Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads Pro is available in three plans:

PlanPriceWebsites
Personal$591 website
Business (most popular)$995 websites
Agency$149Unlimited websites

Every plan includes every Pro feature. The plans only differ in the number of sites. Each plan includes plugin updates and priority support while your licence is active, and the licence key never locks a feature. Pro comes with a 14-day money-back guarantee, and orders are processed by Paddle as merchant of record.

You can compare the plans on the Pro pricing section of the product page.

Limitations to know about

No plugin is perfect for every store. Here’s what to keep in mind before you choose Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads:

  • Lite takes one-time payments only. When EDD Recurring Payments is active, Lite doesn’t offer Paddle for subscription carts.
  • Pro bills one subscription per order, plus any number of one-time products. Buyers buy additional subscriptions separately.
  • Paddle Classic subscriptions can only be sold in USD, EUR and GBP.
  • EDD taxes should be turned off, because Paddle adds sales tax and VAT itself.
  • Use one Paddle gateway at a time. If you’re moving from another Paddle plugin, you’ll need to enter your credentials and set up the webhook again.
  • Paddle is built for digital products, software and SaaS, and its acceptable use policy applies.

For developers

Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads includes hooks for custom setups:

  • wpinterface_paddle_billing_transaction and wpinterface_paddle_classic_pay_link filter what’s sent to Paddle.
  • wpinterface_paddle_billing_webhook and wpinterface_paddle_classic_webhook run after a verified webhook.
  • wpinterface_paddle_webhook_base_url helps with local testing through a tunnel.

The webhook uses the REST API endpoint wpinterface-paddle/v1/webhook.

Verdict: Lite or Pro?

Choose Lite if you sell one-time digital products with Easy Digital Downloads and want Paddle to handle tax, invoices and payments. It’s free, has no order or revenue limits, and includes the same secure webhook handling as Pro.

Choose Pro if you sell subscriptions with EDD Recurring Payments, want licence keys that renew and revoke automatically, refund often, or want Paddle’s payment form embedded right in your checkout page. Since upgrading keeps all your settings and orders, you can start with the free version of Paddle for Easy Digital Downloads and move to Pro whenever you’re ready.
