You don’t need to spend money to launch a good-looking news site or online magazine. WordPress.org lists hundreds of free news and magazine themes, but many are outdated, slow or so limited that you outgrow them in a week. This guide narrows the list down to 13 free WordPress news and magazine themes that are actively maintained in 2026.
We’ve included the five most popular free news themes from other developers alongside eight free themes from our own collection. Every theme here is free to download from the official WordPress.org theme directory, and every one was updated in September or October 2026.
Full disclosure: WPInterface makes eight of the 13 themes on this list (NewsBerry, NewsNation, TruthNews, NewsPanda, TrendingNews, NewsMaster, SportsX and NewsArc). We’ve listed the most popular themes from other developers first, and the install counts, ratings and update dates come straight from WordPress.org as of 27 October 2026, so you can compare them fairly.
What to look for in a free news or magazine theme
A free theme is only a good deal if it keeps working as your site grows. Check these points before you commit:
- Recent updates: a theme that hasn’t been updated in months may break with the next WordPress release. Every theme on this list was updated in the last two months.
- A homepage built from categories: the front page should fill itself with your latest stories by category, so you don’t have to rebuild it every day.
- News features in the free version: a news ticker, featured or slider posts and widgets for grids, tabs and recent posts make a site feel like a real publication.
- Speed: readers leave slow pages, and Google measures loading speed through Core Web Vitals. Lightweight themes give you a head start.
- A clear upgrade path: most free magazine themes have a paid version. Check what the free version leaves out (dark mode, ad widgets, extra layouts) so you know whether you’ll need to upgrade.

Free vs premium: when should you upgrade?
A free theme is the right place to start while you find your audience. Most publishers upgrade when they need one of these:
- Advertising: dedicated ad widgets and header ad slots are usually premium features.
- Branding control: full typography and colour settings, dark mode and removing the footer credit.
- More layouts: extra header styles, archive layouts, block styles and pre-built demos.
- Direct support: free themes are supported in the WordPress.org forums, while premium licences usually include email or ticket support.

How to install a free WordPress theme
- In your WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance → Themes and click Add New Theme.
- Search for the theme by name, for example “ColorMag” or “NewsBerry”.
- Click Install, then Activate.
- Follow the theme’s welcome screen to install recommended plugins or import the starter demo, then replace the sample content with your own.
Try a new theme on a staging site first if your site is already live, so readers never see a half-finished layout.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free WordPress magazine theme?
ColorMag is the most popular, with more than 40,000 active installs and a 4.9-star rating on WordPress.org. The best choice for you depends on how you build pages: Newsmatic suits Elementor users, HitMag suits a classic magazine layout, and SportsX suits sports news.
Are free WordPress news themes safe to use?
Yes, if you download them from the official WordPress.org theme directory. Every theme there is reviewed before it’s listed. Avoid “free” copies of premium themes from other sites, which can contain malware.
Can I make money with a free magazine theme?
Yes. You can add ad code with a standard HTML widget or an ad plugin. Premium versions usually add dedicated ad slots that fit the design better.
Will I lose my content if I switch themes later?
No. Your posts, pages, images and categories stay in WordPress. You may need to set up your homepage, menus and widgets again, because those are tied to the theme.
Do free themes work with the block editor and Elementor?
Most do. All eight WPInterface free themes support both Gutenberg and Elementor, and Newsmatic is built specifically for Elementor.
Conclusion
If you want the most proven free option, pick ColorMag. If you build with Elementor, choose Newsmatic, and for a classic magazine look, try HitMag. For a specific style, such as a classic newspaper, a lifestyle magazine or a sports site, one of our free themes (TruthNews, TrendingNews or SportsX) gives you a head start, with a Pro upgrade when you need ads, more layouts and direct support.
